While waiting for my quick dinner at the local snack bar, I noticed a poster hanging on the wall with the EURO2008 tournament printed out and filled in. All the country names and scores were filled in carefully. Then I saw this big mistake.
For tonight’s match (The Netherlands vs. Russian Federation) it said: “NL – SCCP“. Really, I’m not kidding! I made a picture with my phone’s camera to prove it. (Excuse me for the image quality.)

I think that the person who filled that in wanted to write CCCP, the cyrillic equivalent of USSR. I don’t know what they’re thinking, but the USSR was disestablished in 1991. The USSR national football team (a.k.a. The Red Army) played its last international match on November 13th 1991 against Cyprus. The Red Army was succeeded by the CIS national football team and later by the Russia national football team.
So either way, “SCCP” does not exist. To say that The Netherlands are playing the Soviet Union tonight is incorrect. The snack bar lags behind somewhere 17 years. This may explain the taste the fries tend to have…
Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia’s always on my mind
Oh, come on,
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boys
Back in the USSR
ps. maybe you need to buy a new phone…
I know. It looks a bit like a Polaroid photograph
