Jonathan Harris

At the end of 2007 I saw this little video pass by. It caught my interest immediately and it was my first introduction into the world of TED.

Last week, while I was going through my podcasts I wandered into it again and still found Jonathan Harris his story very interesting.

“Jonathan Harris [is] a New York artist and storyteller working primarily on the Internet. His work involves the exploration and understanding of humans, on a global scale, through the artifacts they leave behind on the Web.”1

In 20 minutes he takes you on a journey around the world and talks about projects like We feel fine which is an application that scours the internet for the words ‘i feel’ or ‘we feel’ and then takes out that sentence and presents it in an attractive and unfamiliar interface.

Maybe it’s already a bit old, but I believe it’s still worth while, here is Jonathan Harris on collecting stories.

I especially like the Whale Hunt project. With this storytelling experiment he created a photographic heartbeat by taking pictures every five minutes during the whole journey. Whenever things started to get exiting he took up to 37 pictures every five minutes.
After that he created a website with the elements that make up a story which allows you to control those and create a story within the story.

The way he presents his work is what I find interesting. He uses very visual interfaces to show text like on the We Feel Fine website. And with the Whale Hunt project he ended up with an infographic kind of interface for a movie!
